{"id":31729,"date":"2015-06-22T04:00:46","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T08:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=31729"},"modified":"2015-06-21T08:57:40","modified_gmt":"2015-06-21T12:57:40","slug":"breaking-its-a-nation-wide-crime-wave-when-you-cherry-pick-your-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2015\/06\/22\/breaking-its-a-nation-wide-crime-wave-when-you-cherry-pick-your-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Breaking &#8211; it&#8217;s a nation-wide crime wave (when you cherry-pick your data)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fee.org\/anythingpeaceful\/detail\/how-to-invent-a-nationwide-crime-wave\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Bier<\/a> looks at how <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> contributor Heather Mac Donald concocted her data to prove that there&#8217;s a rising tide of crime across the United States:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Heather Mac Donald is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/explaining-away-the-new-crime-wave-1434319888\" target=\"_blank\">back<\/a> in the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> to defend her thesis that there is a huge national crime wave and that protesters and police reformers are to blame.<\/p>\n<p>In her original piece, Mac Donald cherry picked whatever cities and whatever categories of crime showed an increase so far this year, stacked up all the statistics that supported her idea, ignored all the ones that didn\u2019t, and concluded we are suffering a \u201cnationwide crime wave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you could do this kind of thing <em>any<\/em> year to claim that crime is rising. <a href=\"http:\/\/fee.org\/anythingpeaceful\/detail\/there-is-no-nationwide-crime-wave-but-baltimore-is-in-trouble\" target=\"_blank\">But it isn\u2019t<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fifteen largest cities <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/opinion\/2015\/06\/09\/there-is-no-nationwide-crime-wave-and-police-killings-are-not-up.html\" target=\"_blank\">have seen<\/a> a 2% net decrease in murder so far this year. Eight saw a rise in murder rates, and seven saw an even larger decline.<\/p>\n<p>Guess which cities Mac Donald mentioned and which she did not.<\/p>\n<p>This is how you play tennis without the net. Or lines.<\/p>\n<p>And in her recent post, buried seven paragraphs in, comes this admission: \u201cIt is true that violent crime has not skyrocketed in every American city \u2014 but my article didn\u2019t say it had.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But neither did her article acknowledge that murder in big cities was falling overall \u2014 in fact, it didn\u2019t acknowledge that murder or violent crime was declining <em>anywhere<\/em>.
