{"id":31474,"date":"2015-05-27T05:00:55","date_gmt":"2015-05-27T09:00:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=31474"},"modified":"2018-01-15T17:33:32","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T22:33:32","slug":"russian-deputy-prime-minister-tanks-dont-need-visas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2015\/05\/27\/russian-deputy-prime-minister-tanks-dont-need-visas\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian deputy prime minister &#8211; &#8220;Tanks don&#8217;t need visas&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Your weekly dose of <a href=\"http:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2015\/05\/meet-the-russian-politician-who-thinks-that-tanks-dont-need-visas\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cold War nostalgia<\/a> this week comes by way of Dmitry Rogozin, the eminently quotable Russian deputy PM in charge of the Russian defence industry:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019ve always joked about it\u2026 so what if they won\u2019t give us visas, put us on sanctions list \u2026 tanks don\u2019t need visas,\u201d he told an interviewer on Russian state television last Sunday, according to <em>AFP<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the former ambassador to NATO and notorious Putin loyalist, was put on a sanctions list of both the U.S. Treasury Department and the European Union, which made Rogozin announce that the Russian defense industry has \u201cmany other ways of traveling the world besides tourist visas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, after Romania prevented the deputy prime minister\u2019s plane from entering its airspace in 2014, he announced that \u201cnext time I will fly in a Tu-160\u2033 \u2014 referencing Russia\u2019s newest strategic bomber. That comment made the Romanian Foreign Ministry issue a statement calling Rogozin\u2019s words \u201ca serious threat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2013, after the commissioning of the first <em>Borei<\/em>-class SSBN (see: \u201cPutin\u2019s Red October: Russia\u2019s Deadliest New Submarine\u201d), the Russian Cabinet member tweeted: \u201cYou bourgeoisie tremble! You are screwed!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The most recent diatribe comes in the wake of two-week long Western military maneuvers in the Arctic, codenamed  \u201cArctic Challenge\u201d and involving 115 fighter aircraft and 3,600 military personnel from nine countries.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>In response to yesterday\u2019s launch of \u201cArctic Challenge\u201d, the Russian Defense Ministry announced a four-day long military exercise of its own, a \u201cmassive surprise inspection\u201d involving 12,000 troops 250 aircraft and 689 units of \u201cvarious weapons and military equipment\u201d targeting an \u201cimaginary enemy.\u201d The snap maneuvers are taking place in the Ural mountains and Siberia \u2013 home to Russia\u2019s central military district.<\/p>\n<p>Dmitry Rogozin\u2019s most recent comment on Russia\u2019s ties with the West was published yesterday on his <em>Twitter<\/em> account: \u201cIt\u2019s not Russia that threatens the West.
