A kind of existential vanguard&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/article\/416669\/putting-childless-pedestal-james-lileks\" target=\"_blank\">James Lileks<\/a> on the people who choose not to have kids:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When the <em>New York Times<\/em> runs a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/15\/opinion\/sunday\/childless-by-choice.html\" target=\"_blank\">piece<\/a> by someone explaining why she didn\u2019t have children, runs a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/04\/05\/style\/no-kids-for-me-thanks.html\" target=\"_blank\">feature<\/a> on authors who have banded together in a book to celebrate child-free lives (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/redirect\/amazon.p?j=1250052939\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not to Have Kids<\/em><\/a>), and runs a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/04\/12\/books\/review\/selfish-shallow-and-self-absorbed-sixteen-writers-on-the-decision-not-to-have-kids.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\">review<\/a> of the book a while later, you know it\u2019s a matter that consumes the thoughts of the nation. Well, part of the nation. Okay, a few thousand people on the Upper East side. So it\u2019s a big deal. <\/p>\n<p>Without reading any of the pieces, you can probably guess why people don\u2019t have kids. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You put it off to pursue a career, and refrigerated your eggs for so long the doctor warned you the baby would look like that Olaf snowman from <em>Frozen<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>You had fertility problems that were your own, or your mate\u2019s li\u2019l swimmers behave like guys who quit halfway into a 10K charity run and find a sports bar to watch the game.<\/li>\n<li>You are a man who warns every prospective mate, \u201cBaby baby don\u2019t get hooked on me, because you\u2019ll just love them and then you\u2019ll set them free,\u201d in case she didn\u2019t get the message from your customized van with the water-bed and the orange shag. <\/li>\n<li>You are part of a couple who realized that children simply do not fit into your busy world of travel, concerts, literary salons, and pretending he\u2019s not gay.<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t want \u2019em. They make messes. Cats\u2019ll do. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Okay? Sure, okay. Not everyone should reproduce, and we should celebrate those who know themselves well and decided to be childless. It\u2019s their choice. We should be sympathetic to those who find themselves childless against their wishes, and pay heed to their observations about how society regards them. We should be a bit suspicious of those whose proclamations on the child-free life have the tiresome characteristics of the Braying Atheist, or those who say they don\u2019t want kids because they\u2019ve seen what it does to other women in Park Slope in Brooklyn. I mean the money they spend on strollers. <\/p>\n<p>But one suspects the book goes a bit too far in exalting the barren-loin option.
