An older article at Wine Folly<\/em><\/a> gives you some useful tactics should you ever be trapped by one of the worst kind of party bores, the wine snob:<\/p>\n

A know-it-all wine snob can ruin a wine experience by forcing the \u201cright\u201d<\/em> agenda down your throat, along with the \u201cright\u201d<\/em> wine. Wine is one of those things about which some people obsess the arcane minutia. Snobbery is when that obsession bleeds into casual social circumstance. We\u2019ve all been to a party where a wine snob is talking down their nose at the complimentary 2-Buck Chuck. Their condescending words spewing forth from their mouth like vomit, pushing amiable party-goers into reluctant participants in a one-sided debate.<\/p>\n

Here are some tricks to shut that jerk up, open the floor to everyone\u2019s tasting experiences, and most importantly: not be a wine snob yourself.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Rule #4 Fight Fire with Fire<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are left with no more outs, it\u2019s time to silence the beast. Remember how I said don\u2019t be a jerk? Well, sometimes a little sarcastic snobbery is in order.
\nDealing With a Snob: You call that a platitude?!?!?<\/p>\n

If put on the spot, keep repeating \u201cInteresting\u2026very interesting\u201d<\/em> after every sip. Nod your head knowingly.<\/p>\n

Say, \u201cOH WOW\u201d<\/em> at awkward times to intentionally interrupt them.<\/p>\n

Hold your glass up to the light and admire the wine. If someone asks you what you see simply respond, \u201cit\u2019s just very surprising.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Wait for them to describe the wine, then smile and while shaking your head encouragingly say “Yeah, you\u2019re close, keep trying.”<\/em><\/p>\n

One-upmanship<\/strong><\/p>\n

AKA, like when Crocodile Dundee says: “You call that a knife? This <\/strong>is a knife”<\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, so they like a wine from 2006 (enter vintage)?
\nResponse<\/strong>: I don\u2019t drink wine that young.<\/p>\n

They favor Italian (or region)?
\nResponse<\/strong>: What a shame, given the situation over there (BE VAGUE!<\/em>) … Defer if confronted, it\u2019s really not classy discussing such dated news after all …<\/p>\n

Oh, they think this wine has an interesting nose on it?
\nResponse<\/strong>: It must be hard to tell drinking out of that<\/em> glass.<\/p>\n

Did they just spew a pretentious wine description at you?
\nResponse<\/strong>: *wince* Really? Huh. Do you smoke?<\/p>\n
