Because that&#8217;d be the only possible explanation for a <a href=\"http:\/\/marginalrevolution.com\/marginalrevolution\/2015\/03\/scarborough-ontario.html\" target=\"_blank\">headline like this one<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Is Scarborough, Ontario the dining capital of the world?<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>Wednesday night I was taken on a restaurant tour of Scarborough \u2014 four different places \u2014 plus rolls from a Sri Lankan locale, consumed in the office of the Dean of UT Scarborough and with the assistance of Peter Loewen.<\/p>\n<p>After that eating, and lots of driving around and looking, I concluded Scarborough is the best ethnic food suburb I have seen in my life, ever, and by an order of magnitude. I hope you all have the chance to visit Scarborough, Ontario.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Update, 20 March<\/strong>: The <em>Toronto Star<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/gta\/2015\/03\/18\/us-economist-touts-scarborough-as-best-ethnic-food-suburb.html?referrer=http%3A%2F%2Ft.co%2Fsfsacd4zKu\" target=\"_blank\">Lauren Pelley<\/a> reports on Tyler Cowen&#8217;s recent visit to Scarborough and his discovery of the area&#8217;s impressive range of high quality ethnic food.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Over the phone from his office at George Mason University in Virginia, Cowen noted that people in Toronto seem to perceive the new, hip restaurants to be elsewhere. \u201cBut it seems to me, you don\u2019t come close to this part of town,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Halpern, dean of UTSC and Cowen\u2019s tour guide last Wednesday, agreed that most people are fixated on the downtown core. \u201cNo one goes east of the DVP,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n<p>Cowen\u2019s post is making the rounds online, and sparking discussion on blogs and Reddit. Scarborough is \u201ca foodie\u2019s best kept secret,\u201d as one commenter put it, though it\u2019s no secret to locals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say that people who are into food, and who have a car, explore Scarborough and other suburbs,\u201d said Jennifer Bain, the Star\u2019s food editor, who has highlighted many of the area\u2019s offerings over the years \u2014 including Uighur fare from Scarborough\u2019s Chinese Muslim community, sweets from local Filipino bakeries, and the global flavours of Hakka Chinese food, to name a few.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230; but I hadn&#8217;t heard that Hell had actually frozen over.
