{"id":28931,"date":"2014-11-29T00:03:07","date_gmt":"2014-11-29T05:03:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=28931"},"modified":"2014-11-28T14:16:50","modified_gmt":"2014-11-28T19:16:50","slug":"lorne-scots-unveil-two-cenotaph-additions-in-brampton-and-georgetown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/11\/29\/lorne-scots-unveil-two-cenotaph-additions-in-brampton-and-georgetown\/","title":{"rendered":"Lorne Scots unveil two Cenotaph additions in Brampton and Georgetown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My old militia regiment was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.army-armee.forces.gc.ca\/en\/news-publications\/central-news-details-page-secondary-menu.page?doc=brampton-and-georgetown-unveil-commemorations-of-afghan-mission\/i2kag1be\" target=\"_blank\">in the news<\/a> recently:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.army-armee.forces.gc.ca\/assets\/ARMY_Internet\/images\/00-news\/2014\/11\/dsc00451-large.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lorne-Scots-at-Georgetown-Cenotaph-853x567.jpg\" alt=\"Lorne Scots at Georgetown Cenotaph\" width=\"853\" height=\"567\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-28932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lorne-Scots-at-Georgetown-Cenotaph-853x567.jpg 853w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lorne-Scots-at-Georgetown-Cenotaph-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lorne-Scots-at-Georgetown-Cenotaph-480x319.jpg 480w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Lorne-Scots-at-Georgetown-Cenotaph.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The communities of Brampton and Georgetown paid a special tribute to veterans of Afghanistan during Remembrance Week, adding the 12-year mission to local cenotaphs dedicated to Canada\u2019s war dead.<\/p>\n<p>On the year that the Canadian mission in Afghanistan drew to a close, civic leaders in both communities determined that adding \u201cAfghanistan,\u201d beneath the names of Canada\u2019s other major conflicts would be a fitting tribute.<\/p>\n<p>In separate ceremonies during Remembrance Week, The Lorne Scots (Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment) were given the honour of unveiling the new additions to the cenotaphs at the Brampton War Memorial and the Georgetown War Memorial.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are honoured by our communities and their tributes, this is a fine way to honour the soldiers who fell or were wounded in Afghanistan,\u201d said Lieutenant-Colonel Duane Hickson, Commanding Officer of the Lorne Scots and an Afghanistan veteran. \u201cAnd it\u2019s very fitting to be doing this during Remembrance Week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian Armed Forces first deployed to Afghanistan in October, 2001, just weeks after the 9\/11 attacks on New York and Washington.<\/p>\n<p>The first Lorne Scot deployed in 2004, with the International Security Assistance Force in Kabul, with the Regiment\u2019s biggest contributions in 2008, 2009 and 2010. The final Lorne Scot returned in September 2013 as part of the final rotation of Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the mission, the Lorne Scots had deployed 46 soldiers and officers, nearly 25% of the unit, to Afghanistan, with the last soldier returning in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The Lorne Scots take pride in their role in their communities, participating in community events and parades every year, and represent them to the nation and on the world stage when they deploy abroad.
