{"id":28789,"date":"2014-11-21T07:14:59","date_gmt":"2014-11-21T12:14:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=28789"},"modified":"2023-02-02T15:58:35","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T20:58:35","slug":"elon-musks-constant-nagging-worry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/11\/21\/elon-musks-constant-nagging-worry\/","title":{"rendered":"Elon Musk&#8217;s constant nagging worry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/morning-mix\/wp\/2014\/11\/18\/why-elon-musk-is-scared-of-killer-robots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justin Moyer<\/a> talks about Elon Musk&#8217;s concern about runaway artificial intelligence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Elon Musk \u2014 the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/environment\/5-ways-futurist-elon-musks-enterprises-may-change-course-our-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">futurist<\/a> behind PayPal, Tesla and SpaceX \u2014 has been caught criticizing artificial intelligence again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risk of something seriously dangerous happening is in the five year timeframe,\u201d Musk wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Futurology\/comments\/2mh8tn\/elon_musks_deleted_edge_comment_from_yesterday_on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comment since deleted<\/a> from the Web site <em>Edge.org<\/em>, but confirmed to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/recode.net\/2014\/11\/17\/codered-elon-musk-is-starting-to-scare-me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Re\/Code<\/a><\/em> by his representatives. \u201c10 years at most.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The very future of Earth, Musk said, was at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe leading AI companies have taken great steps to ensure safety,\u201d he wrote. \u201cThe recognize the danger, but believe that they can shape and control the digital superintelligences and prevent bad ones from escaping into the Internet. That remains to be seen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk seemed to sense that these comments might seem a little weird coming from a Fortune 1000 chief executive officer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not a case of crying wolf about something I don\u2019t understand,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI am not alone in thinking we should be worried.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Musk didn\u2019t explain how humanity might be compromised by \u201cdigital superintelligences,\u201d \u201cTerminator\u201d-style.<\/p>\n<p>He never does.
