When computer printers spread, after all, they didn\u2019t replace printing plants. They replaced typewriters. As costs dropped and graphics software became easy to use, people found all sorts of new uses for desktop printing. But the technology originally caught on by offering a better way to do something familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of thinking of 3-D printers as printers, it makes more sense to think of them as cameras: a way for non-artists to create images. Before it went digital, photography too required a whole ecosystem, with cameras, film, developing and so on. George Eastman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.collectorsweekly.com\/cameras\/kodak\" target=\"_blank\">created a vast amateur market<\/a> by making the part of photography people cared about &mdash; capturing pictures &mdash; easy, while hiding the technically demanding steps. Kodak handled the film and development, proclaiming, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/amex\/eastman\/sfeature\/music_youpress.html\" target=\"_blank\">You Press the Button, We Do the Rest<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The critical insight is that the image is what\u2019s exciting, not the machine that generates it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat 3-D printers are really producing, is demand for design. These machines, this industry, signal a huge, growing appetite for access to 3-D design,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@CosmoWenman\/3d-printing-3d-capture-and-opportunities-for-design-custodians-7985097d2ac4\" target=\"_blank\">said Cosmo Wenman<\/a>, who\u2019s been creating 3-D scans of classical sculptures and releasing the files on sites like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thingiverse.com\/CosmoWenman\/collections\/3d-scans-by-cosmo-wenman\" target=\"_blank\">Makerbot\u2019s Thingiverse<\/a>. (<a href=\"http:\/\/cosmowenman.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wenman<\/a>, whose early efforts I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloombergview.com\/articles\/2012-06-14\/3-d-copying-makes-michelangelos-of-the-masses\" target=\"_blank\">wrote about here<\/a> in 2011, has received backing from Autodesk.)
