{"id":28097,"date":"2014-10-04T10:48:11","date_gmt":"2014-10-04T14:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=28097"},"modified":"2014-10-04T10:48:11","modified_gmt":"2014-10-04T14:48:11","slug":"the-herod-clause-to-get-free-wi-fi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/10\/04\/the-herod-clause-to-get-free-wi-fi\/","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;Herod Clause&#8221; to get free Wi-Fi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I missed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2014\/sep\/29\/londoners-wi-fi-security-herod-clause\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> earlier in the week (and it smells &#8220;hoax-y&#8221;, but it&#8217;s too good to check):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A handful of Londoners in some of the capital\u2019s busiest districts unwittingly agreed to give up their eldest child, during an experiment exploring the dangers of public Wi-Fi use.<\/p>\n<p>The experiment, which was backed by European law enforcement agency Europol, involved a group of security researchers setting up a Wi-Fi hotspot in June.<\/p>\n<p>When people connected to the hotspot, the terms and conditions they were asked to sign up to included a \u201cHerod clause\u201d promising free Wi-Fi but only if \u201cthe recipient agreed to assign their first born child to us for the duration of eternity\u201d. Six people signed up.<\/p>\n<p>F-Secure, the security firm that sponsored the experiment, has confirmed that it won\u2019t be enforcing the clause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have yet to enforce our rights under the terms and conditions but, as this is an experiment, we will be returning the children to their parents,\u201d wrote the Finnish company in its report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur legal advisor Mark Deem points out that &mdash; while terms and conditions are legally binding &mdash; it is contrary to public policy to sell children in return for free services, so the clause would not be enforceable in a court of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the research, organised by the Cyber Security Research Institute, sought to highlight public unawareness of serious security issues concomitant with Wi-Fi usage.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I missed this earlier in the week (and it smells &#8220;hoax-y&#8221;, but it&#8217;s too good to check): A handful of Londoners in some of the capital\u2019s busiest districts unwittingly agreed to give up their eldest child, during an experiment exploring the dangers of public Wi-Fi use.
