{"id":27545,"date":"2014-08-26T08:50:21","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T13:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=27545"},"modified":"2014-08-26T08:53:39","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T13:53:39","slug":"political-labels-and-low-to-no-information-voters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/08\/26\/political-labels-and-low-to-no-information-voters\/","title":{"rendered":"Political labels and low-to-no-information voters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/campaign-spot\/386305\/key-demographic-americas-wrong-information-voters-jim-geraghty\" target=\"_blank\">Jim Geraghty<\/a> discusses why political labelling is so limited in helping get your message across when you&#8217;re talking to potential voters who <em>aren&#8217;t<\/em> political junkies:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><a href=\"http:\/\/pjmedia.com\/tatler\/2014\/08\/25\/one-in-three-adults-think-libertarian-means-the-opposite-of-what-libertarian-means\/\" target=\"_blank\">Liz Sheld<\/a>, examining some Pew survey results and confirming our worst suspicions, that a significant minority of the electorate walk around believing that certain political terms mean the opposite of what they really do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<p><em>Looking just at the first question, which Pew has used to determine whether people who say they are libertarians actually know what the term means, 57% correctly identified the definition of \u201clibertarian\u201d with the proper corresponding ideological label. Looking at the other answers,  an astonishing 20% say that someone who emphasizes freedom and less government is a progressive, 6% say that is the definition of an authoritarian and 6% say that is the definition of a communist.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/E__Strobel\/status\/503965679075479553\" target=\"_blank\">E. Strobel notes<\/a>, \u201cThe term \u2018low-info voter\u2019 is inadequate\u2026 More like \u2018wrong-info voter\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps when we\u2019re trying to persuade the electorate as a whole, we have to toss out terms like \u201cconservative\u201d or \u201clibertarian.\u201d Not because they\u2019re not accurate, but because they represent obscure hieroglyphics to a chunk of the people we\u2019re trying to persuade.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\">\n<p>Neocons! Libertarian Populists! Reform Conservatives!
