The <em>Washington Post<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/spacex-rocket-blows-up-over-texas\/2014\/08\/22\/663cc480-2a5d-11e4-958c-268a320a60ce_story.html?tid=hpModule_9d3add6c-8a79-11e2-98d9-3012c1cd8d1e&#038;hpid=z17\" target=\"_blank\">Christian Davenport<\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A new test rocket manufactured by Elon Musk\u2019s upstart space company, SpaceX, blew itself up a few hundred feet over the Texas prairie after a malfunction was detected, the company said in a statement Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p>At its facility in McGregor, Tex., the company was testing a three-engine version of the F9R test vehicle, the successor to its re\u00adusable Grasshopper rocket, which was designed to launch and then land on the same site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the flight, an anomaly was detected in the vehicle and the flight termination system automatically terminated the mission,\u201d company spokesman John Taylor said in the statement.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket never veered off course, and there were no injuries or near injuries, the statement said. A representative from the Federal Aviation Administration was on site during the test flight.<\/p>\n<p>The company stressed that rooting out problems like the one exposed in the flight is the purpose of the test program and said Friday\u2019s test \u201cwas particularly complex, pushing the limits of the vehicle further than any previous test.
