Thinking:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFuck this. Let\u2019s go sack <a href=\"http:\/\/www.viking.no\/e\/turkey\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Miklagard<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And <a href=\"http:\/\/esr.ibiblio.org\/?p=1694#comment-248040\" target=\"_blank\">Ken Burnside<\/a> points out even more opportunity for enriching historical knowledge:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The reason why Minnesota and Wisconsin were settled by Norwege and Swenske isn\u2019t because the other cultures couldn\u2019t hack the winters.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s because compared to 19th century Norway and Sweden, Upper Minneosta and Upper Wisconsin are *paradise*.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLook! Farmland! Lakes for fishing! Timber and lumber to build from! And no morass of petty aristocracy to tell you no. And, hey, it only snows for five whole months here! They won\u2019t believe THAT back in the old country!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only reason there weren\u2019t more of them was because a lot of Norski STILL remember the marketing flimflam that was Greenland. They had a <em>completely justified<\/em> 900 year old mistrust of ANYONE telling them about \u2018great farmland, only snows for five months of the year, plenty of timber\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m just as happy that my area didn&#8217;t receive any of the snow that&#8217;s been blanketing areas to the south of us.
