{"id":26513,"date":"2014-06-26T08:09:22","date_gmt":"2014-06-26T13:09:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=26513"},"modified":"2014-06-26T08:09:22","modified_gmt":"2014-06-26T13:09:22","slug":"in-nigeria-atheism-is-a-form-of-mental-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/06\/26\/in-nigeria-atheism-is-a-form-of-mental-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"In Nigeria, atheism is a form of mental disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <em>Vice News<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.vice.com\/article\/nigerian-man-deemed-mentally-ill-for-declaring-himself-an-atheist\" target=\"_blank\">Jordan Larson<\/a> reports on the plight of a self-declared atheist who has been confined to a mental institute in northern Nigeria because denying belief in God is a mental illness:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A young Nigerian man is being forcibly held in a mental institution for identifying as an atheist, according to charity organization International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU).<\/p>\n<p>Mubarak Bala, 29, who holds a degree in chemical engineering and is a resident of the primarily Muslim Kano state in northern Nigeria, has been held and medicated against his will at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital since June 13.<\/p>\n<p>According to IHEU, Bala was committed to a mental institution after he told his Muslim family that he did not believe in God.<\/p>\n<p>His family then sought the advice of two doctors; the first gave him a clean bill of health, while the second chalked up his atheism to a &#8220;personality change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>In one of his emails, Bala wrote, &#8220;And the biggest evidence of my mental illness was large blasphemies and denial of \u2018history\u2019 of Adam, and apostacy [sic], to which the doctor said was a personality change, that everyone needs a God, that even in Japan they have a God. And my brother added that all the atheists I see have had mental illness at some point in their life,\u201d according to a statement on IHEU&#8217;s website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKano is a Sharia state and there are many similar cases occurring, where people are forcefully oppressed just because of their beliefs or for conservative religious reasons, or for the &#8216;honour&#8217; of their family,&#8221; Bamidele Adeneye, secretary of IHEU member organization Lagos Humanists, told IHEU. &#8220;Often though you only hear about it afterwards, if at all.
