{"id":26394,"date":"2014-06-18T10:59:39","date_gmt":"2014-06-18T14:59:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=26394"},"modified":"2018-01-11T16:24:25","modified_gmt":"2018-01-11T21:24:25","slug":"is-the-rcn-kicking-the-tires-of-the-mistral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/06\/18\/is-the-rcn-kicking-the-tires-of-the-mistral\/","title":{"rendered":"Is the RCN &#8220;kicking the tires&#8221; of the <em>Mistral<\/em>?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The French navy is visiting Canada&#8217;s East coast this week, taking part in Exercise LION MISTRAL. <a href=\"http:\/\/ottawacitizen.com\/news\/national\/defence-watch\/canadian-soldiers-will-conduct-amphibious-exercises-from-french-warship\" target=\"_blank\">David Pugliese<\/a> reported on the operation a few days ago:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Approximately 200 Canadian Army soldiers from 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group in Valcartier, Quebec will take part in Exercise LION MISTRAL alongside members of the French Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force from June 16-23, 2014, in Gasp\u00e9, Quebec, according to a news release from the DND.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Canadian Army soldiers, primarily from the 1st Battalion, Royal 22e R\u00e9giment (1 R22eR), will board <em>The Mistral<\/em>, the French amphibious assault ship and helicopter carrier in Halifax on June 18; \u2028<\/li>\n<li>Canadian Army troops will conduct littoral operations, including running air-land operations and battle procedures, and establishing a helicopter landing site and a beachhead. Ex LION MISTRAL will also feature a humanitarian assistance air evacuation operation that will help train expeditionary forces to respond to humanitarian disasters;\u2028\u2028<\/li>\n<li>Ex LION MISTRAL will culminate in two disembarkation operations on a Gasp\u00e9 beach on June 20-21 marking the end of the amphibious exercise.
