No, he really does:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>That discomfort you\u2019re sensing all around you? It\u2019s the American Establishment loading its Depends diapers over the prospect of a younger generation that is turning its back on political parties and other zombified artifacts of our glorious past.<\/p>\n<p>On the heels of the Pew Research report titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewsocialtrends.org\/2014\/03\/07\/millennials-in-adulthood\/\" target=\"_blank\">Millennials in Adulthood<\/a>,\u201d two leading <em>New York Times<\/em> columnists have penned anxious articles sweating it out over the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/08\/opinion\/blow-the-self-ie-generation.html?ref=charlesmblow\" target=\"_blank\">The Self(ie) Generation<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/03\/16\/opinion\/sunday\/douthat-the-age-of-individualism.html?partner=rssnyt&#038;emc=rss\" target=\"_blank\">The Age of Individualism<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMillennials (defined by Pew as Americans ages 18 to 33) are drifting away from traditional institutions \u2014 political, religious and cultural,\u201d muses Charles M. Blow, who sees a \u201ca generation in which institutions are subordinate to the individual\u2026 This is not only the generation of the self; it\u2019s the generation of the selfie.\u201d Oh noes! And it\u2019s only gonna get worse: \u201cIn the future,\u201d worries Ross Douthat, \u201cthere will be only one \u2018ism\u2019 \u2014 Individualism \u2014 and its rule will never end. As for religion, it shall decline; as for marriage, it shall be postponed; as for ideologies, they shall be rejected; as for patriotism, it shall be abandoned; as for strangers, they shall be distrusted. Only pot, selfies and Facebook will abide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Does it strike anyone else as odd that selfies \u2014 clearly less the product of rising narcissism and more the product of the same awesome technology that empowers citizens <a href=\"http:\/\/reason.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/11\/cop-who-killed-kelly-thomas-gets-calmly\" target=\"_blank\">to capture cops beating the shit of innocent people<\/a> \u2014 have emerged as this year\u2019s droopy pants, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yrYx-rhIiLE\" target=\"_blank\">backwards baseball caps<\/a>, or visible piercings, as a shorthand for all that is wrong with today\u2019s youth?
