{"id":24607,"date":"2014-03-09T10:45:34","date_gmt":"2014-03-09T14:45:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=24607"},"modified":"2017-04-23T09:00:39","modified_gmt":"2017-04-23T13:00:39","slug":"more-on-that-cultural-appropriation-meme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/03\/09\/more-on-that-cultural-appropriation-meme\/","title":{"rendered":"More on that &#8220;cultural appropriation&#8221; meme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of days back, I linked to a <a href=\"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/03\/07\/white-belly-dancers-are-appropriating-inappropriately-says-salon-writer\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Salon<\/em> article<\/a> where an Arab woman was expressing her anguish and hurt that non-Arabs were appropriating belly dancing and how this was something she just couldn&#8217;t stand to see. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/volokh-conspiracy\/wp\/2014\/03\/06\/what-would-salon-think-of-an-article-called-why-i-cant-stand-asian-musicians-who-play-beethoven\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eugene Volokh<\/a> responds in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>, asking &#8220;What would <em>Salon<\/em> think of an article called, \u2018Why I can\u2019t stand Asian musicians who play Beethoven\u2019?&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Appropriation \u2014 the horror! People treating artistic genres as if they were great ideas that are part of the common stock of humanity, available for all humanity to use, rather than the exclusive property of some particular race or ethnic group. What atrocity will the culturally insensitive appropriators think of next? East Asian cellists? Swedish chess players? The Japanese putting on Shakespeare? Jews playing Christians\u2019 Christian music, such as Mozart\u2019s masses? <em>Arriviste<\/em> Jewish physicists using work done for centuries by Christians? Russian Jews writing about Anglo-American law? Indians writing computer programs, using languages and concepts pioneered by Americans and Europeans? Japanese companies selling the most delicious custard cream puffs? Shame, shame, shame.<\/p>\n<p>But, wait: Maybe \u2014 and I know this is a radical thought \u2014 artists, whether high or low, should be able to work in whatever artistic fields they want to work in. Maybe they should even be able to work in those fields regardless of their skin color or the place from which their ancestors came.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe telling people that they can\u2019t work in some field because they have the wrong color or ancestry would be \u2026 rats, I don\u2019t know what to call it.
