{"id":24110,"date":"2014-02-03T08:46:17","date_gmt":"2014-02-03T13:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=24110"},"modified":"2014-02-03T08:46:17","modified_gmt":"2014-02-03T13:46:17","slug":"corruption-in-the-eu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2014\/02\/03\/corruption-in-the-eu\/","title":{"rendered":"Corruption in the EU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-26014387\" target=\"_blank\"><em>BBC News<\/em><\/a> discusses a recent EU report on bribery and corruption in Europe:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The extent of corruption in Europe is &#8220;breathtaking&#8221; and it costs the EU economy at least 120bn euros (\u00a399bn) annually, the European Commission says.<\/p>\n<p>EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem has presented a full report on the problem.<\/p>\n<p>She said the true cost of corruption was &#8220;probably much higher&#8221; than 120bn.<\/p>\n<p>Three-quarters of Europeans surveyed for the Commission study said that corruption was widespread, and more than half said the level had increased. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interestingly, the <em>perception<\/em> of corruption is significantly higher than the (self-reported) incidence:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the UK only five people out of 1,115 &mdash; less than 1% &mdash; said they had been expected to pay a bribe. It was &#8220;the best result in all Europe&#8221;, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>But 64% of British respondents said they believed corruption to be widespread in the UK, while the EU average was 74% on that question.<\/p>\n<p>In some countries there was a relatively high number reporting personal experience of bribery,<\/p>\n<p>In Croatia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece, between 6% and 29% of respondents said they had been asked for a bribe, or had been expected to pay one, in the past 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>There were also high levels of bribery in Poland (15%), Slovakia (14%) and Hungary (13%), where the most prevalent instances were in healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Malmstroem said corruption was eroding trust in democracy and draining resources from the legal economy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BBC News discusses a recent EU report on bribery and corruption in Europe: The extent of corruption in Europe is &#8220;breathtaking&#8221; and it costs the EU economy at least 120bn euros (\u00a399bn) annually, the European Commission says.
