{"id":22546,"date":"2013-10-16T06:54:26","date_gmt":"2013-10-16T11:54:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=22546"},"modified":"2013-10-16T06:54:26","modified_gmt":"2013-10-16T11:54:26","slug":"if-everyone-followed-these-rules-facebook-would-be-18th-the-size-it-is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2013\/10\/16\/if-everyone-followed-these-rules-facebook-would-be-18th-the-size-it-is\/","title":{"rendered":"If everyone followed these rules, <em>Facebook<\/em> would be 1\/8th the size it is"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brendan McKenna linked to this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/wait-but-why\/annoying-facebook-behavior_b_4081038.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Huffington Post<\/em> piece<\/a>, providing a gentle reminder to too many <em>Facebook<\/em> users about their insufferable posting habits:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>To be <em>unannoying<\/em>, a Facebook status typically has to be one of two things:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Interesting\/Informative<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Funny\/Amusing\/Entertaining<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You know why these are unannoying? Because things in those two categories do something for me, <em>the reader<\/em>. They make my day a little <em>better<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, interesting statuses would be fascinating and original (or a link to something that is), and funny ones would be hilarious. But I&#8217;ll happily take <em>mildly amusing<\/em> &mdash; at least we&#8217;re still dealing with the good guys.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, <strong>annoying statuses typically reek of one or more of these five motivations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Image Crafting<\/strong>. The author wants to affect the way people think of her.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Narcissism<\/strong>. The author&#8217;s thoughts, opinions, and life philosophies matter. The author and the author&#8217;s life are interesting in and of themselves.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Attention Craving<\/strong>. The author wants attention.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Jealousy Inducing<\/strong>. The author wants to make people jealous of him or his life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) Loneliness<\/strong>. The author is feeling lonely and wants Facebook to make it better. This is the least heinous of the five &mdash; but seeing a lonely person acting lonely on Facebook makes me and everyone else sad. So the person is essentially <em>spreading<\/em> their sadness, and that&#8217;s a shitty thing to do, so it&#8217;s on the list.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook is infested with these five motivations &mdash; other than a few really saintly people, most people I know, myself certainly included, are guilty of at least some of this nonsense here and there.
