The signals intelligence service known as Communications Security Establishment Canada has been eager not to be in the public eye, but allegations are being made that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/world\/brazil-spying-report-spotlights-canadas-electronic-eavesdroppers\/article14720003\/#dashboard\/follows\/\" target=\"_blank\">CSEC has been spying on the Brazilian government&#8217;s mining and energy ministry<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The impact for Canada of these revelations could be equally grave: they come at a time when Brazil has become a top destination for Canadian exports, when a stream of delegations from the oil and gas industries are making pilgrimages to Rio de Janeiro to try to get a piece of the booming offshore oil industry, and when the Canadian government is eager to burnish ties with Brasilia. Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird visited Brazil in August, and spoke repeatedly about the country as a critical partner for Canadian business.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p>While CSEC\u2019s role in conducting economic espionage has been alluded to before, how it does this job has not. The significance of the documents obtained by <em>Glob<\/em>o in Brazil is that they speak to how \u201cmetadata\u201d analysis by CSEC can be used to exploit a rival country\u2019s computer systems.<\/p>\n<p>The CSEC-labeled slides about the \u201cOlympia\u201d program describe the \u201cBrazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy\u201d as a \u201cnew target to develop\u201d despite \u201climited access\/target knowledge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The presentation goes on to map out how an individual\u2019s smartphone &mdash; \u201ctarget\u2019s handset\u201d &mdash; can be discerned by analysis, including by cross-referencing the smartphone\u2019s Sim card with the network telephone number assigned to it and also to the handset\u2019s unique number (IMEI).<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ctop secret\u201d presentation also refers to attacks on email servers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have identified MX [email] servers which have been targeted to passive collection by the Intel analysts,\u201d one slide says, without explaining who the speaker is.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you haven&#8217;t heard of CSEC before, you&#8217;re certainly not alone.
