{"id":20443,"date":"2013-05-27T09:19:10","date_gmt":"2013-05-27T14:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=20443"},"modified":"2013-05-27T09:19:10","modified_gmt":"2013-05-27T14:19:10","slug":"torontos-mass-transit-planners-go-for-the-wallet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2013\/05\/27\/torontos-mass-transit-planners-go-for-the-wallet\/","title":{"rendered":"Toronto&#8217;s mass transit planners go for the wallet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.680news.com\/2013\/05\/27\/metrolinx-to-unveil-funding-plan-for-transit-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>680 News<\/em><\/a> is reporting on the latest attempt by Metrolinx to fund their mass transit pipe dreams:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Metrolinx is asking drivers to pay more to fund transit expansion across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).<\/p>\n<p>The transportation agency handed over its funding report to Queen\u2019s Park on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year, $50-billion Big Move plan includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 per cent increase to HST (generating $1.3 billion\/year)<\/li>\n<li>5-cent\/litre gas tax (generating $330 million\/year)<\/li>\n<li>Parking space levy (generating $350 million\/year)<\/li>\n<li>15 per cent development charge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Metrolinx CEO Bruce McCuaig said that will generate $2 billion annually for the transit expansion plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMetrolinx is recommending that we have dedicated funds,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also recommending that  these funds be placed into a transportation trust fund to create certainty that The Big Move projects are delivered and to provide the  accountability and transparency GTHA residents demand and deserve.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Someone really should do a version of &#8220;The Monorail Song&#8221; from <em>The Simpsons<\/em> for the light rail fan club in Toronto.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>680 News is reporting on the latest attempt by Metrolinx to fund their mass transit pipe dreams: Metrolinx is asking drivers to pay more to fund transit expansion across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
