Gen. Howard B. Bromberg, the Army G-1, explained, \u201cthe amount of money spent on ribbons and medals has increased exponentially over the decades.\u201d As proof, Bromberg pointed to a picture of Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, a five-star general, who was bedecked with only three ribbons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we\u2019d look at a private with only three ribbons as if he were some sort of dirtbag,\u201d said Bromberg.<\/p>\n<p>Although no final list had been decided upon, one Army spokesperson said that several ribbons were all but certain to be canned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Army Service Ribbon? What the hell?,\u201d asked the spokesman. \u201cThe fact that you\u2019re in an Army uniform is proof of your army service. Why should I give you a damn ribbon?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Army officials would neither confirm nor deny the fate of the National Defense Medal. One simply said, \u201cSo you were drinking beer in Germany, while the entire U.S. military was fighting Desert Storm? Remind us, again, why you deserve a medal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Army indicated they would be cutting medals incrementally, starting with \u201cI have a pulse\u201d-tier awards, followed by \u201cThanks for showing up\u201d awards, and finally, \u201cI did an okay job\u201d awards.
