{"id":19396,"date":"2013-03-12T09:23:58","date_gmt":"2013-03-12T14:23:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=19396"},"modified":"2013-03-12T09:23:58","modified_gmt":"2013-03-12T14:23:58","slug":"if-consumers-were-10-better-off-why-did-they-call-it-a-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2013\/03\/12\/if-consumers-were-10-better-off-why-did-they-call-it-a-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"If consumers were 10% better off &#8230; why did they call it a &#8220;disease&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <em>Maclean&#8217;s<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.macleans.ca\/2013\/03\/12\/why-do-they-call-it-dutch-disease-anyways\/#.UT8OJ2HdAS4.twitter\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen Gordon<\/a> illustrates the classic case of burying the lede for popular economics:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<ul>\n<p><em>So Dutch consumers are roughly 10% better off than they would have been, but companies have been able to compete only by paring their profit margins.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">\u201cThe Dutch disease,\u201d <em>The Economist<\/em>, November 26, 1977<\/p>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Talk about burying the lede. That sentence appears at the end of the 10th paragraph of the much-referred-to but rarely read article in <em>The Economist<\/em> that coined the phrase \u201cDutch Disease.\u201d In  the normal course of things, a 10 per cent increase in consumers\u2019 purchasing power would be the stuff of banner headlines, but, for some reason, <em>The Economist<\/em> chose to hide that point deep into the story and qualify it with a caveat about how hard it had become for companies to compete.
