{"id":19350,"date":"2013-03-10T09:45:39","date_gmt":"2013-03-10T14:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=19350"},"modified":"2013-03-10T09:46:08","modified_gmt":"2013-03-10T14:46:08","slug":"british-tories-float-the-notion-of-leaving-the-european-convention-on-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2013\/03\/10\/british-tories-float-the-notion-of-leaving-the-european-convention-on-human-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"British Tories float the notion of leaving the European Convention on Human Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s not a declared aim &mdash; yet &mdash; but when a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-21726612\" target=\"_blank\">senior government minister<\/a> even mentions this as an option, you have to assume it&#8217;s being discussed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Conservatives would consider leaving the European Convention on Human Rights if they won the 2015 election, the home secretary has said.<\/p>\n<p>Theresa May told an event organised by the <em>ConservativeHome<\/em> site the party would also scrap the Human Rights Act.<\/p>\n<p>She said it restricted the UK&#8217;s ability &#8220;to act in the national interest&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>A private poll by ex-party treasurer Lord Ashcroft, meanwhile, suggested the party would lose 93 marginal seats to Labour if the election was held now.<\/p>\n<p>The BBC understands Mrs May was putting forward ideas for the next Conservative manifesto, and such a move was not current government policy.<\/p>\n<p>[. . .]<\/p>\n<p>Mrs May told the gathering she was sceptical whether the convention limited human rights abuses in other countries and suggested it restricted Britain&#8217;s ability to act in its own interests.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When Strasbourg constantly moves the goalposts and prevents the deportation of dangerous men like Abu Qatada, we have to ask ourselves, to what end are we signatories to the convention?&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Are we really limiting human rights abuses in other countries?
