{"id":19188,"date":"2013-02-27T11:58:49","date_gmt":"2013-02-27T16:58:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=19188"},"modified":"2013-02-27T11:59:43","modified_gmt":"2013-02-27T16:59:43","slug":"parliamentary-budget-officer-conducting-constitutional-vandalism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2013\/02\/27\/parliamentary-budget-officer-conducting-constitutional-vandalism\/","title":{"rendered":"Parliamentary Budget Officer conducting &#8220;constitutional vandalism&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senator Anne Cools is displeased by the <a href=\"http:\/\/o.canada.com\/2013\/02\/27\/senator-calls-kevin-pages-legal-action-against-government-constitutional-vandalism\/\" target=\"_blank\">PBO&#8217;s ongoing legal and media campaign<\/a> against the Federal government:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An independent senator says the parliamentary budget watchdog, Kevin Page, overstepped his mandate by taking the government to court in a battle for spending figures, and the Senate should force Page to withdraw the legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<p>In a speech to the Senate Tuesday, Sen. Anne Cools argued that Page\u2019s regular comments to reporters and more recent comments to his international counterparts about his battles with the government over spending figures were \u201cprovocative and inflammatory public statements\u201d that are \u201cintolerable and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Page\u2019s actions, Cools argued, were tantamount to contempt of Parliament, were a breach of parliamentary privilege and were affecting the Senate\u2019s credibility to carry out its functions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContemptuous and un-parliamentary,\u201d she said of Page\u2019s actions and comments, \u201cthey are constitutional vandalism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are inappropriate conduct from a Library officer under the direction of the Speakers of the Senate and the House of Commons.
