In an article designed to stir up controversy<\/a> over aid to Haiti, Kathy Shaidle provides a neat thumbnail portrait of Don Cherry:<\/p>\n

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) says taxpayers must keep funding this great unwatched billion-dollar behemoth because the network has a never-hear-the-end-of-it \u201cmandate\u201d<\/a> to \u201creflect Canadian values.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which \u201cthe Corpse\u201d<\/a> does indeed, but for just about nine minutes every Saturday night, and<\/em> only during hockey season, and<\/em> by accident rather than design.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when Don Cherry\u2019s red light goes on and the former Boston Bruins coach begins bellowing about the fruitcakes and foreigners destroying his beloved game.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s old, white, loud, and uneducated. He\u2019s bigoted, mawkishly patriotic, and he dresses like an Edwardian time traveler stuck in 1970s Detroit trying to pass himself off as a pimp \u2014 and Don Cherry\u2019s Coach\u2019s Corner<\/em> has also been the CBC\u2019s highest rated\u2026 thing<\/em> for generations<\/a>. It\u2019s not even a show, you see, just a segment \u2014 possibly the only \u201cintermission\u201d in history that prompts people to run to their seats instead of away from them.<\/p>\n

By lucky chance, \u201cshhhh!\u201d is the same \u201cword\u201d in both official languages, and that\u2019s the sound heard in sports bars and rec rooms across Quebec and the ROC (Rest of Canada) as the show\u2019s familiar intro<\/a> gallops into millions of ears.<\/p>\n

To the countless Canucks who can\u2019t stand him, however, Cherry is a perpetual outrage machine. The coach doesn\u2019t make \u201cKinsley gaffes,\u201d<\/a> either \u2014 those \u201ccontroversial\u201d statements which accidentally<\/em> reveal some embarrassing truth. Cherry tells embarrassing truths on purpose. His only \u201ccrime\u201d is saying things<\/a> lots of his countrymen agree with but aren\u2019t allowed to say \u2014 or even let themselves think<\/em> \u2014 anymore.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
