{"id":18556,"date":"2013-01-13T12:54:18","date_gmt":"2013-01-13T17:54:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=18556"},"modified":"2013-01-13T12:54:18","modified_gmt":"2013-01-13T17:54:18","slug":"britain-considering-reinforcements-for-falkland-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2013\/01\/13\/britain-considering-reinforcements-for-falkland-islands\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain considering reinforcements for Falkland Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If nothing else, the heated rhetoric from Argentina is encouraging the British government to think about sending <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2261616\/Britain-set-military-presence-Falkland-Islands.html\" target=\"_blank\">more military resources to the Falklands<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Britain is prepared to send additional military backup to the South Atlantic as a &#8216;show of force&#8217; to Argentina over the Falkland Islands.<\/p>\n<p>It is understood an extra warship, another RAF Tycoon [sic] combat aircraft and further troops could be dispatched to the region ahead of the March referendum over whether the islands remain part of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <em>Sunday Telegraph<\/em>, the options being proposed by planners at the Permanent Joint Headquarters in Northwood, London, include conducting naval exercises in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatives include sending elements of the Army\u2019s 16 Air Assault Brigade \u2014 the airborne task force which includes members of the Parachute Regiment \u2014 which has just completed a series of demanding exercises in Spain preparing for &#8216;general war&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Islanders will vote on March 11 on whether they wish to remain an overseas territory of the UK.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected there will be a 100 per cent &#8216;yes&#8217; vote, which intelligence officials have warned the Prime Minister could lead to an aggressive &#8216;stunt&#8217; by Argentina, such as planting the country&#8217;s flag on the island.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If nothing else, the heated rhetoric from Argentina is encouraging the British government to think about sending more military resources to the Falklands: Britain is prepared to send additional military backup to the South Atlantic as a &#8216;show of force&#8217; to Argentina over the Falkland Islands.
