{"id":18017,"date":"2012-12-02T12:02:34","date_gmt":"2012-12-02T17:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=18017"},"modified":"2020-07-13T10:57:04","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T14:57:04","slug":"uss-enterprise-the-first-nuclear-powered-aircraft-carrier-decommissioned","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2012\/12\/02\/uss-enterprise-the-first-nuclear-powered-aircraft-carrier-decommissioned\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>USS Enterprise<\/em>, the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, decommissioned"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/nation\/carrier-enterprise-retired-from-service-1.4283013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>USS Enterprise<\/em><\/a> was taken out of service yesterday after a long career:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The world&#8217;s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier was retired from active service on Saturday, temporarily reducing the number of carriers in the U.S. fleet to 10 until 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>USS Enterprise<\/em> ended its notable 51-year career during a ceremony at its home port at Naval Station Norfolk, where thousands of former crew members, shipbuilders and their families lined a pier to bid farewell to one of the most decorated ships in the Navy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;ll be a special memory. I&#8217;ve missed the <em>Enterprise<\/em> since every day I walked off of it,&#8221; said Kirk McDonnell, a former interior communications electrician aboard the ship from 1983 to 1987 who now lives in Highmore, S.D.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>H\/T to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.outsidethebeltway.com\/uss-enterprise-first-nuclear-powered-aircraft-carrier-taken-out-of-service\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Mataconis<\/a> for the link.
