{"id":17636,"date":"2012-11-06T11:19:45","date_gmt":"2012-11-06T16:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=17636"},"modified":"2012-11-06T11:19:45","modified_gmt":"2012-11-06T16:19:45","slug":"its-official-morris-dancers-are-offensive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2012\/11\/06\/its-official-morris-dancers-are-offensive\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s official: Morris Dancers are &#8220;offensive&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, they&#8217;re &#8220;offensive&#8221; to a couple of Police Constables in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2228151\/Police-tell-Morris-Dancers-sticks-hankies-complaints-traditional-routine-offensive.html\" target=\"_blank\">Surrey<\/a>, anyway:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A group of Morris Dancers were ordered to stop performing in the middle of a routine after police received a complaint that their dancing was \u2018offensive\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The 15-strong group of English folk dancers from the respected Wild Hunt Bedlam Morris troupe were told to \u2018stop making a din\u2019 during a performance outside The White Lion pub in Warlingham, Surrey.<\/p>\n<p>The folk dancers were performing in spooky costumes for a free Halloween show outside the 15th century pub to an audience of around 30 customers, but were cut short after just six dances.<\/p>\n<p>The group had planned at least 10 other dances, but were interrupted by two police officers who told them to \u2018down\u2019 their handkerchiefs and sticks and \u2018move on\u2019 as they were causing a noise nuisance.<\/p>\n<p>Despite pleading with the officers to continue their routine &#8211; which includes songs like Thor\u2019s Hammer, Maiden Castle and Half a Farthing Candle, they were told to leave in the \u2018interest of community relations\u2019 last Tuesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently the campaign against the evil Morris Dancers has been going on for a while:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In August last year a group of Morris dancers from the Slubbing Billys troupe were booted out of the Swan and Three Cygnets pub in Durham after a barmaid said the bells on their shoes broke the bar\u2019s music ban.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>H\/T to Nick Packwood for the link.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, they&#8217;re &#8220;offensive&#8221; to a couple of Police Constables in Surrey, anyway: A group of Morris Dancers were ordered to stop performing in the middle of a routine after police received a complaint that their dancing was \u2018offensive\u2019.
