And his theories remain ambitious and apocalyptic. Over the weekend, for instance, he grandly declared that Canada \u201cis no longer a united county.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy? Because an \u201cunbridgeable gap\u201d has opened up between \u201cextremists\u201d and people who are \u201clevel-headed.\u201d Caplan suggests the former category is composed of Canada\u2019s equivalent of \u201cThe Tea Party, the Koch brothers [and] the National Rifle Association.\u201d The latter category, meanwhile, is composed of people who think like Gerald Caplan.<\/p>\n<p>A few paragraph later, Caplan tells us that \u201cMany Canadians believe the Harper government has shattered the historic mould. Harperland is a place many Canadians do not recognize as theirs. Mr. Harper seems not to share many traditional Canadian cultural values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Values like <em>what<\/em>, precisely? I wondered. Universal health care? The welfare state? Equalization? Bilingualism? Gay marriage? The land of unregulated abortion?<\/p>\n<p>None of those have changed.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe Caplanites feel alienated in a country without a Wheat Board and a long-gun registry.
