The amusing “real” story of how Percy Bysshe Shelley was inspired to write Ozymandias<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n

I met a traveller from an antique land
\nWho said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
\nStand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
\nHalf sunk, a shatter\u2019d visage lies, whose frown
\nAnd wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
\nTell that its sculptor well those passions read
\nWhich yet survive, stamp\u2019d on these lifeless things,
\nThe hand that mock\u2019d them and the heart that fed.
\nAnd on the pedestal these words appear:
\n\u2018My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
\nLook on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!\u2019
\nNothing beside remains. Round the decay
\nOf that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
\nThe lone and level sands stretch far away.<\/em><\/p>\n

Out in a field just off I-27 south<\/strong>, maybe 15 minutes away from Amarillo, our beloved Stanley Marsh 3 commissioned this statue<\/strong>, \u201cOzymandias<\/a>.\u201d Of course, being a merry prankster<\/strong>, he pretends on an introductory plaque that these \u201cancient ruins\u201d in fact inspired Shelley\u2019s poem.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
