{"id":16219,"date":"2012-07-27T11:13:48","date_gmt":"2012-07-27T16:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=16219"},"modified":"2012-07-27T11:13:48","modified_gmt":"2012-07-27T16:13:48","slug":"bruce-arthur-calls-for-moderation-in-regard-to-the-london-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2012\/07\/27\/bruce-arthur-calls-for-moderation-in-regard-to-the-london-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Bruce Arthur calls for moderation in regard to the London Olympics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <em>National Post<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.nationalpost.com\/2012\/07\/27\/please-resist-the-urge-to-mock-londons-opening-ceremony\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bruce Arthur<\/a> tries to encourage all of us, in spite of our memories of what British journalists were saying about the Vancouver Olympics, to avoid being nasty about the London games:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But perhaps we in Canada should restrain ourselves, as a nation. Perhaps we should take the higher road. That is, unless the higher road is crammed with traffic in this built-for-horses-and-carriage town. Or the tube is down again.<\/p>\n<p>The Brits did not treat Canada kindly two years ago, it\u2019s true. The <em>Guardian<\/em> said Vancouver could be the Worst Games Ever three days in, and they based the assessment on refunded snowboard tickets rather than on the preventable death of an athlete. The <em>Guardian<\/em> also called our glowing totem poles a collection of ice penises, and even the BBC announcer cocked an eyebrow, as it were. The <em>Times of London<\/em> called us cursed, while the <em>Daily Mail<\/em> mocked the escalation of the budget. They were, to be honest, kind of jerks about it.<\/p>\n<p>But that doesn\u2019t mean that Canadians should stoop to a similarly savage brand of mockery, beginning with the Opening Ceremony. It doesn\u2019t mean we should make fun of the leaked details of the event, starting with children in hospital beds, which doesn\u2019t seem terribly festive. It doesn\u2019t mean we should make fun of the fact that Muse will apparently play, and even if they do not, that the official song of the Olympics by Muse is a grating, strutting, whining, overcompensatory sneer of a song.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the National Post, Bruce Arthur tries to encourage all of us, in spite of our memories of what British journalists were saying about the Vancouver Olympics, to avoid being nasty about the London games: But perhaps we in Canada should restrain ourselves, as a nation.
