{"id":16067,"date":"2012-07-16T07:48:15","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T11:48:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=16067"},"modified":"2018-01-11T16:06:07","modified_gmt":"2018-01-11T21:06:07","slug":"well-grant-this-petition-but-only-one-condition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2012\/07\/16\/well-grant-this-petition-but-only-one-condition\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;ll grant this petition, but only one condition&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/worldnews\/europe\/france\/9401412\/French-city-of-Angers-that-was-home-of-Plantagenets-demands-return-of-Crown-Jewels.html\" target=\"_blank\">French petition<\/a> calls for the return of the British Crown Jewels to Angers, in compensation for the execution of the last Plantagenet pretender to the throne in 1499:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Angers, in the Loire valley, was the capital of Anjou province and the geographical base of the Plantagenets, who ruled England from 1154 until 1485, providing some of the most celebrated monarchs in British history, including Richard the Lionheart and Henry V.<\/p>\n<p>But when Edward Plantagenet, the Earl of Warwick, was executed for treason in the Tower of London in 1499, the house\u2019s legitimate male line came to an end. \u201cAs redress for the execution of Edward, Angers today demands that the Crown Jewels of England be transferred to Angers,\u201d reads a petition posted on the city\u2019s official website.<\/p>\n<p>Recalling 25-year-old Edward\u2019s \u201cunfair and horrible death\u201d at the hands of henchmen working for Henry VII, England\u2019s first Tudor king, the city believes it is owed an apology and 513 years\u2019 worth of compensation. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/timworstall.com\/2012\/07\/16\/sure-one-condition\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Worstall<\/a> explains the one condition under which Her Majesty should accept the French claim:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Happily stick the Crown Jewels in Angers.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately after the union of the Angevin Empire with the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll have the Duchy of Normandy back too if you don\u2019t mind.
