{"id":15498,"date":"2012-06-15T08:24:01","date_gmt":"2012-06-15T13:24:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=15498"},"modified":"2012-06-15T08:24:59","modified_gmt":"2012-06-15T13:24:59","slug":"perhaps-dad-is-not-superfluous-after-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2012\/06\/15\/perhaps-dad-is-not-superfluous-after-all\/","title":{"rendered":"Perhaps &#8220;Dad&#8221; is not superfluous after all"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <em>National Post<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalpost.com\/2012\/06\/14\/fathers-day\/\" target=\"_blank\">Misty Harris<\/a> reports that &mdash; contrary to certain assertions from the gender war front &mdash; fathers actually do have a positive role to play in the lives of their children:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Though the prevailing Father\u2019s Day question is what to get Dad, a new study suggests the more pressing issue is what dads can give in return.<\/p>\n<p>In a long-term analysis of 36 international studies of nearly 11,000 parents and children, researchers have found that a father\u2019s love contributes as much \u2014 and sometimes more \u2014 to a child\u2019s development as that of a mother, while perceived rejection creates a larger ripple on personality than any other type of experience.<\/p>\n<p>The power of paternal rejection or acceptance is especially strong in cases where the father is seen by his child as having heightened prestige in the family, as this tends to boost his influence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our half-century of international research, we\u2019ve not found any other class of experience that has as strong and consistent an effect on personality as does the experience of rejection \u2014 especially by parents in childhood,\u201d says co-author Ronald Rohner, whose study appears in the journal <em>Personality and Social Psychology Review<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My relationship with my father was less than positive, and I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m mischaracterizing it by calling it &#8220;rejection&#8221;.
