{"id":14670,"date":"2012-04-18T09:13:07","date_gmt":"2012-04-18T14:13:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=14670"},"modified":"2012-04-18T09:13:07","modified_gmt":"2012-04-18T14:13:07","slug":"why-do-we-even-bother-calling-them-life-sentences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2012\/04\/18\/why-do-we-even-bother-calling-them-life-sentences\/","title":{"rendered":"Why do we even bother calling them &#8220;life sentences&#8221;?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>According to a recent <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> article, among the civil service jobs at risk in the government&#8217;s cutbacks are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/politics\/ottawa-axes-rehabilitation-program-for-prison-lifers\/article2403546\/\" target=\"_blank\">26 convicted murderers<\/a> who&#8217;ve been paroled and are paid to minister to another 2,280 paroled murderers (numbers from the 2010-11 report). <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The <em>Globe and Mail<\/em> has learned that one of the many federal programs that will be cut in its entirety is LifeLine, a program aimed at helping people with life sentences &mdash; or \u201clifers\u201d &mdash; successfully re-integrate into society once they\u2019ve been paroled. <\/p>\n<p>At a starting salary of about $38,000, the program hires and trains successfully-paroled lifers to mentor other lifers who are still incarcerated or who have been recently released on parole. <\/p>\n<p>[. . .]<\/p>\n<p>Under the Criminal Code, offenders serving a life sentence for murder may be considered for parole after serving 15 years of their sentences.
