{"id":14577,"date":"2012-04-13T08:43:28","date_gmt":"2012-04-13T13:43:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=14577"},"modified":"2012-04-13T08:43:28","modified_gmt":"2012-04-13T13:43:28","slug":"filling-in-for-envisat-the-csas-radarsats-1-and-2-will-try-to-fill-some-of-the-gaps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2012\/04\/13\/filling-in-for-envisat-the-csas-radarsats-1-and-2-will-try-to-fill-some-of-the-gaps\/","title":{"rendered":"Filling in for Envisat: &#8220;the CSA&#8217;s Radarsats 1 and 2 will try to fill some of the gaps&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Space Agency is still at a loss on why their flagship Envisat satellite <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/science-environment-17692027\" target=\"_blank\">suddenly went silent<\/a>, but while they&#8217;re trying to diagnose and hopefully fix the problem, the Canadian Space Agency is helping to cover some of the gaps:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ESA-Envisat.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"ESA Envisat\" width=\"304\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-14578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ESA-Envisat.jpg 304w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/ESA-Envisat-150x98.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/>Controllers say the eight-tonne spacecraft appears to be in a stable condition, but they are not receiving any data at all from it.<\/p>\n<p>Contact was lost with Envisat at the weekend shortly after it downloaded pictures of Spain&#8217;s Canary Islands.<\/p>\n<p>A recovery team, which includes experts from industry, is now trying to re-establish contact with the craft.<\/p>\n<p>Mission managers said on Friday that they were working through a number of possible fault scenarios but conceded they had little to go on.<\/p>\n<p>[. . .]<\/p>\n<p>Of more immediate concern are the operational and scientific projects that rely on Envisat data.<\/p>\n<p>The satellite&#8217;s information is used daily to monitor for oil spills at sea, to check on iceberg hazards, and to provide information for meteorological forecasts, among a wide range of services.<\/p>\n<p>All this had now been disrupted, said Prof Liebig.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we have done is [activate] the contingency agreement we have with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) which we have had for many, many years. Canada has responded very positively.
