{"id":1346,"date":"2009-10-09T12:03:15","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T16:03:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=1346"},"modified":"2010-11-27T11:37:52","modified_gmt":"2010-11-27T15:37:52","slug":"consciously-green-consumers-more-likely-to-cheat-says-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2009\/10\/09\/consciously-green-consumers-more-likely-to-cheat-says-study\/","title":{"rendered":"Consciously &#8220;green&#8221; consumers more likely to cheat, says study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2009\/10\/08\/greens_are_thieves_and_liars_say_trick_cyclists\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Register<\/em><\/a> has an interesting summary of a recent University of Toronto study:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Psychologists in Canada have revealed new research suggesting that people who become eco-conscious &#8220;green consumers&#8221; are &#8220;more likely to steal and lie&#8221; than others.<\/p>\n<p>The new study comes from professor Nina Mazar of the University of Toronto\u2019s Rotman School of Management and her colleague Chen-Bo Zhong.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those lyin\u2019, cheatin\u2019 green consumers,&#8221; begins the statement from the university. &#8220;Buying products that claim to be made with low environmental impact can set up &#8216;moral credentials&#8217; in people\u2019s minds that give license to selfish or questionable behavior.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>[. . .]<\/p>\n<p>So there you have it: People who buy green &mdash; who offset their carbon, who purchase greened-up electricity, who put windmills on their roofs etc etc &mdash; are in the main thieving, lying, holier-than-thou scumbags. The old adage is right: You can never trust a hippy.<\/p>\n<p>Much as we&#8217;d love to believe it, though, the whole study &mdash; like all of its News McNugget fast-food psychobabble kind &mdash; has caused the needle on our bullshit meter to flick far across into the brown zone.
