{"id":12626,"date":"2011-12-17T10:24:18","date_gmt":"2011-12-17T15:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=12626"},"modified":"2011-12-17T10:24:18","modified_gmt":"2011-12-17T15:24:18","slug":"why-is-everyone-upset-about-sopa-but-not-about-all-the-other-power-grabs-by-the-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2011\/12\/17\/why-is-everyone-upset-about-sopa-but-not-about-all-the-other-power-grabs-by-the-government\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is everyone upset about SOPA but not about all the other power grabs by the government?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/esr.ibiblio.org\/?p=4009\" target=\"_blank\">ESR wonders<\/a> why SOPA seems to finally have woken up many people about their rapidly eroding liberties, but not all the other things the federal government has done:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A government that is big enough to give you everything you want is big enough to take everything away from you &mdash; including your Internet freedom.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the thought that keeps running through my head as I contemplate the full-scale panic going on right now about SOPA, the \u201cStop Internet Piracy Act\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a bad bill, all right. It\u2019s a <em>terrible<\/em> bill &mdash; awful from start to finish, idiotic to the core, corruptly pandering to a powerful special-interest group at the cost of everyone else\u2019s liberty.<\/p>\n<p>But I can\u2019t help noticing that a lot of the righteous panic about it is being ginned up by people who were cheerfully on board for the last seventeen or so government power grabs &mdash; cap and trade, campaign finance \u201creform\u201d, the incandescent lightbulb ban, Obamacare, you name it &mdash; and I have to wonder\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t these people ever learn? Anything?
