We examine Miltiades&#8217; strategy, the Athenian command structure, <em>hoplite<\/em> tactics, and Herodotus&#8217; restrained account of the battle.<\/p>\n<p>We also analyse the later legend of the Marathon runner and the political consequences of the victory. Marathon did not end the Persian threat \u2014 but it changed Greek confidence forever.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the end of the war.
