We examine Aristagoras&#8217; appeals to Sparta and Athens, Herodotus&#8217; famous scene before Cleomenes, and the fateful decision of Athens to send twenty ships.<\/p>\n<p>We also analyse the burning of Sardis, Darius&#8217; calculated response, and the suppression of Ionia.
