Comedy could be brutally obscene and politically personal, naming living leaders on stage \u2014 evidence of a public culture far less timid about speech than most modern states.<\/p>\n<p>From there I move to Athens as a maritime power: trade, grain dependence, Piraeus, coinage, state pay, and the economic dynamism that supported participation in Assembly and law courts.
