{"id":100444,"date":"2026-01-20T05:00:42","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T10:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/?p=100444"},"modified":"2026-01-19T19:51:28","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T00:51:28","slug":"those-awful-awfls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/2026\/01\/20\/those-awful-awfls\/","title":{"rendered":"Those awful AWFLs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Substack, <a href=\"https:\/\/brackishwatersbarrensoil.substack.com\/p\/why-does-everyone-hate-liberal-white\" target=\"_blank\">Rohan Ghostwind<\/a> responds to a recent <em>New York Times<\/em> opinion from Michelle Goldberg pretending not to understand why &#8220;the right&#8221; is against Affluent White Female Liberals (AWFLs):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Michelle Goldberg recently wrote an opinion piece in the <em>New York Times<\/em> called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/16\/opinion\/republicans-ice-white-women.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Right Is Furious With Liberal White Women<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NYT-The-right-is-furious-with-liberal-white-women.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NYT-The-right-is-furious-with-liberal-white-women-625x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"640\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-100445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NYT-The-right-is-furious-with-liberal-white-women-625x640.jpg 625w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NYT-The-right-is-furious-with-liberal-white-women-480x491.jpg 480w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NYT-The-right-is-furious-with-liberal-white-women-147x150.jpg 147w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NYT-The-right-is-furious-with-liberal-white-women-50x50.jpg 50w, https:\/\/quotulatiousness.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/NYT-The-right-is-furious-with-liberal-white-women.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, she talks about the rising contempt for the AWFL: Affluent white female liberal.<\/p>\n<p>The first part of the opinion piece is a play-by-play of the Renee Good situation, pointing out that the right is freaking out about roving bands of Karens.<\/p>\n<p>The part I find interesting is in the final paragraph:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<p><em>It wasn&#8217;t long ago that casual contempt for white women was the domain of the left, at least that part of the left that took books like &#8220;White Fragility&#8221; seriously. So it&#8217;s striking how easily conservatives, who&#8217;ve been stewing over insults to white people for at least five years, have singled out a group of white women as the enemy.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the interesting part: throughout the course of her opinion piece, she touches on White Female Liberal part. Conspicuously missing is the first part of the acronym: <em>affluent<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This is par for the course for an <em>NYT<\/em> Opinion piece: play into the identity politics aspect while simultaneously downplaying class. This is, of course, a big reason why the Democrats lost ground with working class people during the 2024 election.<\/p>\n<p>[&#8230;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rob Henderson popularized the term luxury beliefs &#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And if it was ever one group of people who embody the most luxury beliefs per capita it would be the AWFL&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>What makes them uniquely annoying is their persistent refusal to acknowledge how sanctimonious they come across to the rest of the world.
