Vikings amass penalties when they should be amassing points

Follow-up post to yesterday’s Twitter-heavy reaction to another winnable game that the Vikings somehow managed to find a way to lose.

Ted Glover at the Daily Norseman says this game was like a kick in the junk:

Well, let’s get some positive momentum going in this column. If we can get a couple of strong sentences put together to start off, then maybe we can….

PERSONAL FOUL, DEFENSE. HIT A DEFENSELESS DANGLING PARTICIPLE. 15 YARDS, STILL FIRST DOWN.

Well damn. Okay, 1st and 25. Let’s just put a couple of sentences together and see what we get. A well placed pronoun here, a breakaway adverb there, and we’re in business. There were a lot of good things to take away from today’s disappointing loss, but at the end of the day, the Viki…

PERSONAL FOUL, DEFENSE. RUNNING INTO THE EDITOR. 15 YARDS, RESULT OF THE PENALTY IS A FIRST DOWN FOR THE OFFENSE.

DAMN IT. How can you expect me to write a good story when I keep getting these stupid penalties?

Tom Pelissero of 1500 ESPN:

When Jerome Simpson’s suspension ends on Sept. 24, he figures to get a warm welcome back to the Minnesota Vikings’ lineup.

Christian Ponder didn’t complete a pass for more than 20 yards in Sunday’s 23-20 loss to Indianapolis, time and again finding no one open down the field on the relatively few occasions coordinator Bill Musgrave tried to dial up a deep ball.

“I think (the Colts’) objective was to take away the deep ball and take away Percy (Harvin) and (Michael) Jenkins getting downfield,” Ponder said. “That’s why we kept running the ball. They were basically in two-deep all game.”

Ponder finished with a highly efficient line — 27-of-35 passing (77.1%) for 245 yards, two touchdowns and a 114.6 rating. But he also took four sacks, one of them resulting in a fumble, and was forced to scramble three other times as protection broke down.

At Bleacher Report, Brandon Alisoglu is already suggesting that the Vikings will be hiring a new head coach in the near future (and offering names):

The Minnesota Vikings started out the season with games against two of the worst teams in the NFL. In a telling statement, they went 1-1, which means they are in the argument for the 32nd best team.

A come-from-behind win over the Jacksonville Jaguars wasn’t exactly a vote of confidence, but at least it was a win. Losing to the Indianapolis Colts stifles whatever enthusiasm Vikings fans might have had based on an undefeated record.

Leslie Frazier has been the head coach for 24 games so the team should have started showing some improvement at this point. They haven’t.

If Minnesota doesn’t enjoy an unforeseen turnaround soon, one of the following four fellows may be taking over for him in 2013.
