Latest Nanos poll confirms NDP gains

While not quite as dramatic as some of the headline polls over the last couple of days, the Nanos three-day tracking poll confirms that the NDP surge is real, knocking the Liberals decisively back into third place:

  1. As bad as it looks, it isn’t all that bad when you consider that the NDP spike is coming from Quebec, at the expense of the Bloq. CPC is still very strong in Ontario and West. I am disappointed with the Atlantic Canada numbers, you would think that Newfoundland’s newer oil economy would be more supportive of free markets than socialism.

  2. There just aren’t that many people in Quebec for this to be a purely Quebec surge. If you want even scarier, someone posted on Twitter a few minutes back that the daily reading for the Nanos 3-day rolling poll had the NDP in the lead with 36%!

Newfoundland doesn’t appear to be willing to forgive and forget the early disputes with Harper.

If the Liberals’ numbers don’t pull out of their dive soon, there may be a Kim Campbellesque corporal’s guard of Liberals in the new parliament.

  3. Well, I am still hopeful that this is the year the left splits the vote the way the Reform and PCs split the vote for Jean Chretien. I am not sad to see the Liberals reduced, and I would be gleeful to see them shut down to 2 or 3 seats in the house, though that will never happen. And you can bet that the first time it makes the news that the NDP poll higher than the CPC the markets will go haywire!

It would be like giving a 16 year old the key to the liquor mart… the 16 year old would sprout so many friends that the barn would be empty overnight, and the hangover can only last so long.
